First Look 2018: Year of the Dog

It’s the Year of the Dog on the Chinese lunar calendar, and Las Vegas Market’s First Look trends program is celebrating the fortuitous timing. Our loyal four-legged friends earn the zodiac spotlight in 2018, but, really, dogs are a perennial favorite in home and gift categories. Consider the more than 60 million U.S. households that own a dog, and it’s no wonder why myriad breeds become top-performing motifs on home, gift and holiday products.

You’ll find tail-wagging (and some purr-inducing) examples in First Look’s Year of the Dog vignette, one of four cross-category displays to be located in the Grand Plaza Courtyard Jan. 28-Feb. 1. Look for cute, cuddly and humorous varieties, especially in gift categories. In addition to pillows and scatter-size rugs, we’ll be featuring boxed notes, greetings cards, printed napkins and journals from brands including Potluck Press (P1-4071), Santoro (P1-4062 and C978) and Design Design (C1044).

Potluck Press (P1-4071) dishcloths make easy work of dirty dishes.

A new cocktail napkin from Design Design (C1044) features a pooch in a pinch.

Beloved canine companions and tartan plaid combine on Mitchell Black’s (C554A) Foxcroft, a peel-and-stick wallpaper featuring English hunt scenes. TOV Furniture’s (B658) assorted dog beds — especially the Husky design in navy or gray and the Yorkshire in navy, pink or gray — match the mood.

Besides home and gift products with dog motifs, First Look’s Year of the Dog vignette will feature pet products. Modgy’s (P1-4066) portable, reusable water bowls are just one example. Look for pet beds and pet toys in the First Look Year of the Dog vignette, too — and for good reason. According to the American Pet Products Assn.’s year-end estimates, consumers will spend $69.36 billion on their pets in 2017, up from $66.75 billion in 2016.
