A Las Vegas road trip is on plenty of folks’ bucket list. Something about driving through the desert and into the illuminated oasis calls to them. This year, you can make your drive to Las Vegas Market extra special by planning a road trip to fuel your soul.
The drive from LA can take you by some of America’s most eye-catching national parks or along the nostalgic Route 66. Either route could take a single day’s drive, but both offer sites worth staying overnight — or several nights!
If you head east from LA on I-10, you’ll encounter one of the country’s most-visited national parks, Joshua Tree. This is a beloved destination for campers and rock climbers because of the great stargazing the open desert sky offers. On either side of the park on I-10 are Palm Springs and Blythe, California. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway gives you unimaginable views of the city and desert to its east. In Blythe, you can see one of America’s most mysterious landmarks, the Blythe Intaglios — geoglyphs portraying seemingly alien species at enormous scale. Both Palm Springs and Blythe have resorts and hotels with themes to fit your vibe.
For a trip down memory lane, take Route 66. It starts (or ends?) in Santa Monica and carves its way across the eastern California wilderness to Needles, on the border with Arizona, hitting some landmarks that transport visitors to a different time. The first attraction you’ll come to after you escape the urban sprawl is the Bottle Tree Ranch outside Oro Grande. Traveling north, you will hit Barstow and the Route 66 Mother Road Museum, a free museum open on the weekends. From there, you can deviate from Route 66 to explore the Mojave National Preserve, or keep going to the Historic Route 66 California Gateway Site in Needles.
Although there is a fairly straight drive from Phoenix to Vegas, taking a slightly longer trip opens you to scenic sights in northern Arizona. Head north on I-17 to Flagstaff for all the hiking you could dream of, especially Coconino National Forest. You can also check out Lowell Observatory or the Museum of Northern Arizona for indoor fun. Next, you can visit the Grand Canyon Deer Farm, March through October, and pet varied species of deer native to the region.
The Grand Canyon is the area’s most popular attraction, and a picture on the Skywalk at Eagle Point is perfect for your social media feed. Although a bit out of the way, you can reach an observation spot within two hours of your driving route. Perfectly situated along Highway 93, however, is the famous Hoover Dam. Once you see the dam, you know you’ll soon see the Vegas lights, as it’s just 45 minutes away.
Driving to Las Vegas from Salt Lake City on I-15 will take you through picturesque mountains into what might feel like Martian landscape. Zion National Park and Valley of Fire State Park exemplify these two extremes best. You can also explore other historic landmarks on the way.
With sites like Angels Landing, Big Bend, Kolob Arch and The Narrows, Zion National Park can capture you for a day or a week. Utah’s first national park is situated at the convergence of mountains, desert and basin geographic regions, thus giving it an array of sites to see. In Nevada, Valley of Fire State Park shows how quickly the mountains to the northeast transition to desert. The Aztec Sandstone and rock pillars seem otherworldly but are less than an hour from the interstate.
Along I-15, the Territorial Statehouse State Park Museum in Fillmore displays the state’s early history inside its oldest government building. The Frontier Homestead State Park Museum in Cedar City features historic buildings, wagons and more from the earliest settlers of Utah. Before you exit Utah, stop in St. George to see dinosaur fossils at the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site.
Las Vegas is a supreme destination but, as the saying goes, “Life’s about the journey, not the destination.” So why not plan a trip to remember on your way to Las Vegas Market this year? Planning a road trip to or from Vegas can add extra fun or recharge your batteries after the euphoria of Market. Make sure to check out all the events during Market to make the most out of the whole experience.
